1. On this day (March 7, 1965), 600 Civil Rights activists, who were supposed to go from Selma to the capital of Montgomery in Alabama to protest the shooting death of activist Jimmy Lee Jackson, were met with violence from state and county officers.  The unarmed marchers were beaten and gassed as they tried to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge.  The news coverage of the incident shocked the nation, gained the sympathy of whites throughout the country for the civil rights movement, and led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
