1. Today (January 24) is the 140th birthday of Arturo Schomburg, bibliophile and founder of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. From his birth in Cangrejos, Puerto Rico in 1874 to his death in Brooklyn, New York in 1938, Arturo Alfonso Schomburg has led an admirable life and legacy. As Howard Dodson writes in The Legacy of Arthur Alfonso Schomburg: A Celebration of the Past, A Vision for the Future, Schomburg wasn’t just a bibliophile; he was also “a patron of the arts, a law clerk, an exhibition and book collection curator, a lecturer, a revolutionary, an Odd Fellow, a Kappa Alpha Psi, a scholar, a translator, a writer, a founder and leader of scholarly organizations, an educator, and a social activist.”
