1. My Schomburg Experience (Redefined)

Steven G. Fullwood, archivist, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, shares another one of his favorite items from the Schomburg collection:

Promotional fliers from Easy A.D. Harris Collection (Hip-Hop Archive Project)

“Easy A.D. Harris is a member of the Cold Crush Brothers, one of the first Hip-Hop groups founded in 1978. Harris is also a collector who was gracious enough to donate items from his personal collection.

But it’s hard to pick one thing from this  collection so I’ll highlight the most  fascinating part of his collection,  the fliers.  Harris’s collection  of fliers document early  Hip-Hop in Harlem,  the Bronx and Brooklyn  (ca. 1979-1985) and  feature well-known  artists such  as Kurtis BlowGrandmaster  Flash and Afrika  Bambaataa.

Back then Hip-Hop was in its infancy and known  through word-of-mouth. The fliers were  handed out, posted to telephone polls and  pasted on buildings to advertise shows.  Many of the fliers contain photographs or  artwork inspired by graffiti artists or comic  book art.”
